Paul began playing his father's old mandolin in 1965. He took up guitar in 1969, and in 1974 he got his first fiddle. During his high school and college years he had the chance to hear and play with local old-time and bluegrass musicians at dances, festivals and front porches in Ohio, New England North Carolina and upstate New York. After college he spent a year in the west of Ireland, learning dance tunes on the fiddle. Upon his return he completed an internship at the Folk Music Archive at the Library of Congress blossoming traditional music community in the Pacific Northwest. In Seattle he has played in old-time and Irish bands, and in Balkan performing and dance groups. In 2005 Paul teamed up with local singer and guitarist Sally Rose to play old-time harmony duets and fiddle tunes. They have a website at with sound samples, biographies and booking info; see their Myspace page. Paul also recorded a CD, "Our Last Goodbye," in the winter of 2004. It too is available from www.cdbaby.com. It features 13 songs and instrumentals of Paul's own composition, on which he plays acoustic, electric and resonator guitars, fiddle, mandolin, banjo and bass. |
